WhedonCon is a great place to dip your toes into cosplay. While you won’t see as many high-end, professional cosplayers as you will at larger conventions, there are still plenty of people cosplaying as their favorite characters whether they be members of Joss’ Whedon’s universes or not. Whether the character be comical, tragic or just downright badass, you’re sure to see something that brings a smile to your face. This Chiana cosplay was one of the best I’ve seen of the lovable miscreant!
The official Cosplay Contest happened at 7 PM on Saturday, but there were plenty of people walking the convention floor before the event such as:
Buffy cosplayers! You simply can’t go wrong cosplaying the kickass blonde cheerleader who slays in more ways than one 😉
The talented RuiningRyan was spotted at WhedonCon sporting Yuri’s outfit in the “Welcome to the Madness” teaser trailer for the upcoming Yuri!!! on Ice film. If looks could kill!
If one keeps their eyes open, some casual cosplayers can also be spotted! This reference to Oz’s Halloween costume in the Buffy episode “Fear Itself” made me laugh 🙂
And on to the contest night itself! One of my personal favorites for WhedonCon cosplay was the Kaylee and Jayne pair (pictured above). The way these two are capturing the personality of these characters is so spot-on!
Another Kaylee cosplay from one of the judges. Who wouldn’t want to cosplay such a joyful, vibrant character?
An original character cosplay, this is “the lunch lady” from Firefly, an unshown, unmentioned, but still important member of that universe.
A cosplay from “Con Man: The Game”, in which your main objective is to run the best convention you can! The janitor, clearly based on Joss Whedon, makes his way onscreen whenever there is a mess needing cleanup.
Remember that time Willow was a vampire in “Doppelgangland”? Here’s a cosplay to commemorate that episode!
A heartwarming Willow and Tara cosplay from their walk in the park during “Once More, With Feeling” episode.
Even when Spike is a puppet, he and Angelus don’t get along.
Thankfully, Spike was able to sip away and enjoy a glass of bloo- I mean, Bloody Mary.
The contest officially began with two bunny suits, reminding the audience of Anya’s phobia of rabbits.
The BuffyBot made an appearance, referencing Spike’s “cold, chiseled body” to the delight of the audience.
Another “Once More With Feeling” cosplay, Xander and Anya argue in their PJs, then end the quarrel with a dance number 🙂
Another Halloween cosplay, this time from the “Halloween” episode itself, Buffy shyly roams the modern streets as a befuddled 18th century girl.
Captain Hammer and his fangirl from Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog – What a man!
You’d better watch out – Angelus is on the loose!
Faith showed there was more than one way to be a Slayer, striking her own path. You can follow her adventures nowadays in the Angel and Faith comics!
Another striking Buffy cosplay ~
KAYLEE <3
Another Captain Hammer
Although vampires can’t age, Spike is still looking as rebellious as ever with grey hair and wrinkled skin.
The Chiana cosplayer nailed her performance! This is exactly what China herself would have done onstage!
Drusilla comes out with Spike the announcer to give out the prizes – the grand winner has the honor of being Drusilla’s next meal!
Xander and Anya placed!
Chiana stole the show though, for costume construction and performance!
Though delighted that she won, China was a bit lost as to what to do with her Firefly LootCrate prize….
A group pic to end the night!
Hope you all enjoyed a taste of WhedonCon’s cosplay! You can also check out WhedonCon’s Sunnydale Mall and keep your eyes out for more updates!
Stay geeky!
