It was a misty afternoon at United Picture & Frame Company in Pasadena. Do all the locals know about this frame shop? My girlfriend, who is an artist, introduced me to it a few years back, and last week I finally had an opportunity to take something to be framed. I was struck by the whimsical display of oil paintings, frame samples and the patinated walls.
I had read also that it was “World Water Day” (March 22nd), and so this black and white painting with a youth drinking water especially caught my attention.
What is the history of this little angel? I’ve been studying Renaissance art in Art History class (and spent 3 months studying in Florence, Italy a few years back), so this angel propped up against a cabinet also caught my eye!
For some moments I let the patina of days gone by speed my imagination to a make-believe attic where magical things lay hidden in trunks or wardrobes : )
But wait! I’m in a frame shop in Pasadena! Wait, what is this generous space used for? Can we hold an art exhibit here?
The official United Picture & Frame Company’s website says the shop is a second generation family business founded in 1959.
And further, “With an 8,000 square foot facility on the world famous Rose Parade route in Pasadena, California, we are one of the oldest and largest independent picture frame companies on the West Coast. We proudly feature frames of all styles including classic American plein air frames, contemporary frames, ornate frames, portrait frames, fine wood frames, antique frames, rustic and western frames, European frames, Asian frames, acrylic frames, metal frames and much, much more. Whether your framing needs are large or small, simple or complex, we can help and invite you to see why our service and selection set us apart.”
I can attest that they have samples of frames beyond what any painting or art piece might require, and the personal attention to detail is something that other “big box” framing shops will have a hard time matching!
I highly recommend that all artists and home decorators alike come, see, and frame at this unique Pasadena treasure!!
