Kortni’s Kitchen: As American As Apple Pie!

As American As Apple Pie
As American As Apple Pie

Apple pie is the thing most people will think of when you say “Fourth of July”. I remember the first time I made an apple pie. My boyfriend at the time wanted one, so I asked his mom how to make apple pie. She told me to use two pie crusts. She meant frozen, but I made fresh, so if you can imagine this pie had double the amount of crust as it had filling. I’m pretty sure when I sliced into it there were 3 inches of air between top crust and pie filling! That did not stop me from eating it. These are a few of my favorite ways of making apple pie just a little differently.

 Popovers: Individual

These little apple pie popovers are so easy to make that you will have no reason not to make them. All you need is the apple pie filling and puff pastry. Cut the puff pastry sheet into 4×4 squares and lay a little filling in each. Make sure to fold the puff pastry over the filling and have the seam on the bottom. Once they are cooked, you can drizzle them with a little honey. This way they are easy to transfer for a block party and there is no need for spatulas or plates.

Mini: Double Trouble

Mini apple pies are fun for couples. These are a little too big for one person, but are perfect for two. If you’re celebrating the 4th of July with your loved one, then this is the way to go. Make sure you get small tins. If you are making the crust by hand, you only need a partial recipe or you will have too much crust. The apple in this pie recipe is red, but I advise you use green. If you opt for red, do one that is crisp like Red Delicious or Gala. The other fun element to these date night pies is the syrup. You can use it to make your filling. With most fillings you use butter, but for these I substituted butter with bacon fat. Every man’s dream apple pie tastes like bacon. I used the extra as a dipping sauce.

Apple Cheesecake: Whole

Now this is the most fun twist on apple pie I have made. It is a blondie brownie crust (yum!) with a caramel cheesecake middle. It is topped with apple pie filling and garnished with cinnamon whipped cream. I know that sounds like a lot of stuff, and if you are looking for quick, this is not the pie to make. If you have the time, this is the way to go. It is just different enough to be the hit of the party.

These are just a few ways to make apple pie new and fresh. Don’t feel boxed in with apple pie. It may be the true American dessert, but just like every American we are all different, so why does our pie have to be the same?
