It was Friday night in the Pasadena/Altadena area, a great evening to experience an art exhibit in an uber-cool, hometown space! I was glad to find an art-opening reception nearby in Altadena, held at McGinty’s Gallery at the End of the World!
The “I Love LA – Street Project” curated by End of the World’s owner Ben McGinty showcases the art of New Jersey born Cammie Jones. Cammie moved to the Los Angles area when she was a teenager. She told me that she didn’t like it much then, but she couldn’t feel more differently about L.A. now! In fact, Cammie is quoted on her website as saying, “I embrace its “bigness”. I’m delighted by its character(s). I revel knowing how each step in this city opens up endless possibilities. I’m a connoisseur of the slight change in the plumb of sidewalk and alley urine. I love how cultures collide and remix into something new, something to be seen, something to capture.”
Cammie cites Randy Newman’s as an expression that matches her own “Love for L.A.” – so check it out here:
A large part of her work at McCinny’s Gallery is comprised of photographs that she has taken all over L.A. The photos are intriguing, drawing comparisons to both abstract art as well as a more urban-rhythmic street art.
Here is one of my favorites:
Another medium of choice for Cammie is oil painting. Here are some of those exhibited (and all are for sale) at McGinty’s:
Here are some more of Cammie’s vibrant oil pieces:
Of note, McGinty’s Gallery and Cammie’s exhibit have also been a part of the “Open Studios” festivities that took place in Pasadena and Altadena June 4th & 5th from 11 – 5pm!
Open Studios is a bi-annual event, and features 75 artists and 41 locations, as well as live demonstrations and music! Check their website for the next happening!
