Picasso’s well-known Guernica depicts the horrors and suffering of war in 1937, the same period Weeping Woman was painted. The power of Picasso’s denouncement of war through this painting inspired countless pieces of art in sculpture, dance, cinema, and architecture, as well as activism against war, and provided a prime opportunity to face these realities and to learn from them.
The world was at war during this period, and on one side atrocities previously unknown to humankind prevailed to divide the human race. Those of us whom have not experienced war directly cannot imagine. The very reason that presents opportunity to, ‘Imagine our home our planet without the threat of harm – without ANY weapons of mass destruction to eliminate the possibility for even worse destruction’.
And yet war prevails. A flyer with the comedians Laurel and Hardy stating, “Everyone is entitled to my opinion,” was placed in the case with the above image.
Whether or not one is attracted to Picasso’s opinions, his impact on the art world is undeniable. The real world of Picasso is reflected in words spoken by fellow artists: inspiring – giving “permission to create”, prolific, profound, objective ‘art by people for people’.
It’s a Picasso!
It’s a Picasso!
