Last week on February 26th, I was happy to attend a panel discussion sponsored by Fuller Seminary held in the very historic Second Baptist Church in south Los Angeles. The forum was called, “A Bridge to a New America: A Conversation on Race, Faith, and Justice”, and featured Jim Wallis, Founder and President of Sojourners Magazine. The title of the gathering caught my eye, it was so close to tonight’s Culture Honey sponsored Discussion Group, “Faith, Justice, and Action, Race Relations in 2016” title!
This was a multi-racial gathering coming together to discuss a just pathway forward for all ethnicities in America, a just pathway not limited to those of the current dominant white culture. In particular, the discussion spring-boarded from an understanding of a Christ-centered faith, and the responsibility in regard to racial equality of those that follow this spiritual pathway.
The church’s senior pastor, the Reverend Dr. William Eps welcomed those in attendance and was also a part of the panel after Jim Wallis spoke. Minnie Hadley-Hempstead, the President of the Los Angeles Branch of the NAACP was also a part of the panel as was Ken Fong, Pastor of Evergreen Church in Rosemead, CA and Fuller student Jennifer Guerra. Jennifer Guerra in particular spoke eloquently about her experience within the Hispanic faith community. The panel was moderated by current Fuller President, Mark Labberton.
Jim Wallis spoke about the “Parable of Los Angeles”, what would our decisions be, how would we use our multi-cultural influence to shape the future for good and given an example for the rest of the U.S? He also wrote a post about it too – what will our decisions and determinations be moving forward?
Don’t forget that happening locally tonight, (2.23.16), is “Culture Honey Presents: Faith, Justice, and Action – Race Relations in 2016” – email “discuss@culturehoney.com” for more info!
And also locally this coming weekend, (2.28.16, 1 – 3pm) at the All Saints Church in Pasadena, CA., the film, White Like Me —featuring author and educator, Tim Wise will be screened with a special discussion with the author afterward. The conversation continues….
