MLK Speaks
50 years ago today Dr. Martin Luther King was shot and killed on a hotel balcony in Memphis, Tennessee. I was not taught enough about Dr. King in school, and it has only been in recent years (which some are now calling the “new civil rights era”) that I have educated myself to the impact of this great man. Many consider him a modern prophet; I include myself in that category. I had never read or listened to Dr. King’s final speech, “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop”, before now. Please join me in allowing this great leader’s last words spoke in public to impact your heart and mind and join all of us at Culture Honey in remembering and even belatedly mourning his loss.
Here is an excerpt from the end of his speech. I hope we all will look at our lives’ work and be able to say,
“Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind.
Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land!
And so I’m happy, tonight.
I’m not worried about anything.
I’m not fearing any man.
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”
